Guest reviews from around the world

The Loser - 1.837m

Breathtaking Dachstein panorama, a crystal-clear lake, and an alpine south-facing launch site in the heart of Styria.

Alpine Flying Mountain in the Ausseerland

The Loser is one of the most impressive flying mountains in Ausseerland. Situated high above Lake Altaussee, it offers an extraordinary backdrop of rugged rock faces, deep dark water and sweeping views of the Dachstein. From the launch site, you can see why this mountain is considered one of the most beautiful spots for paragliding in Styria.

Spacious South-Facing Launch with Lake Views

The spacious south-facing launch site near Lake Augstsee offers a direct view across the entire Ausseerland and toward the Dachstein Glacier. The open terrain ensures a smooth, comfortable takeoff and already conveys a sense of openness and altitude even before lifting off.

A Special Flight Experience with Over 1,000 Meters of Altitude Difference

With around 1,000 meters of altitude down to the landing area, the Loser offers an intense yet calm flying experience. Especially in the early hours, a clear and relaxed atmosphere prevails, turning the flight over Altaussee into a true nature experience—appreciated by locals and visitors alike.

A Scenic Highlight

As an alpine flying mountain, the Loser is more sensitive to wind than some other launch sites in the Salzkammergut, but it offers truly exceptional scenery in return. If you are looking for more stable flying conditions, longer flight times, or a particularly versatile flying area, we recommend our main flying site at the Zwölferhorn on Lake Wolfgangsee, which provides ideal conditions for extended paragliding experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tandem Flying at the Loser

Everything you need to know about your flight over Altaussee and the Ausseerland.

The landing area is located directly next to the “Parkplatz Zentrum” car park in Altaussee. A bench and a sunshade provided by the local flying club “Loserflieger” make this spot ideal for spectators. Friends and family can comfortably watch the landing from here.

Alternatively, spectators are welcome to ride up Mount Loser and watch the takeoff at the launch site. After takeoff, we fly back down to Altaussee and land again next to the car park.

The striking Mount Loser rises high above the Ausseerland and offers spectacular flying conditions when weather and wind are suitable. Due to its elevation and exposed location, Mount Loser features true alpine flying conditions, with more demanding launch requirements than sites such as the Zwölferhorn or the Gaisberg.

For this reason, ideal wind and weather conditions are especially important at Mount Loser. Depending on the conditions, tandem flights may occasionally need to be rescheduled or postponed. Safety is always our top priority.

A tandem flight from Mount Loser offers a truly breathtaking panorama. Shortly after takeoff, we glide over the dark, almost black waters of Lake Altaussee, while the impressive Trisselwand rock face rises directly in front of you. In the distance, the main Alpine ridge comes into view.

Behind Mount Sarstein, you can spot the Dachstein Glacier, and the view extends far into the Inner Salzkammergut. On clear days, even Mount Schafberg is visible. The combination of flying over the lake and landing close to its shoreline makes this experience especially unique.

Mount Loser offers excellent flying conditions in several seasons. Summer mornings and autumn are particularly popular, thanks to clear air, calm conditions and outstanding visibility across the Ausseerland and toward the Dachstein. Autumn flights are especially atmospheric due to the wide-ranging views.

Winter tandem flights are also possible at Mount Loser when wind and weather conditions are suitable. The clear winter air, snow-covered landscape and alpine scenery create a very special flying experience. Due to the mountain’s alpine character, careful weather assessment is essential at all times.

You should plan approximately 1.5 hours for the entire tandem paragliding experience at Mount Loser. This includes meeting in Altaussee, the drive to the Loser cable car, the ascent, takeoff preparation and landing.

The actual flight time is usually between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on conditions. The schedule is deliberately relaxed and planned without time pressure.

Dress appropriately for the season.
In summer, a light jacket is usually enough, as it can be a little cooler in the air. In colder months, we recommend warm clothing and gloves. Sunglasses are also advisable on sunny days.

There is limited storage space during the flight. Small personal items such as a smartphone, wallet or small handbag can be taken along. Larger items such as backpacks, bags or suitcases will be safely stored in the car at the landing area.

Please wear sturdy sports shoes, ideally hiking boots with good tread. As Mount Loser is an alpine flying site, solid footwear is especially important. From the cable car exit, we walk a short distance over alpine terrain to reach the launch site, making proper shoes essential for a safe and comfortable experience.

If wind or weather conditions at Mount Loser are not suitable, safety is our highest priority. In many cases, our main flying area at the Zwölferhorn in St. Gilgen on Lake Wolfgangsee offers more stable and favorable conditions. In such situations, it is often possible to switch the flight to the Zwölferhorn.

If no flight is possible on that day, we will work with you to find a suitable alternative date. If neither a change of flying site nor a new date can be arranged, any payment already made will of course be fully refunded.
