A tandem flight at Wolfgangsee is straightforward: You don’t need any elaborate preparation, but you should wear the right clothing and appropriate shoes. Especially at the Zwölferhorn in St. Gilgen, we take off from a somewhat steep meadow slope. That’s why good shoes and comfortable clothing are important to ensure that the takeoff, flight, and landing go smoothly.
In this article, you’ll learn what to expect when tandem paragliding in the Salzkammergut —from shoes and jackets to sunglasses.
What kind of shoes do I need for tandem paragliding?
For your tandem flight, you’ll need closed-toe shoes that fit well. This is important because you mustn’t lose your shoes during takeoff, flight, and landing.
Regular athletic shoes or sneakers are usually more than enough. The important thing is that they provide good support and, ideally, have some tread. At the Zwölferhorn, we start on a grassy slope where you need good traction as you begin running.
Hiking boots aren’t absolutely necessary, but they’re certainly suitable as well.
In short: If you can walk a few steps downhill on a meadow in them, you’re all set.
What should I wear for a tandem flight in the summer?
In the summer, you can generally dress however you feel comfortable. Even shorts are fine in warm weather.
Still, keep in mind that you’ll feel the wind while tandem paragliding. Even if it’s warm down at Lake Wolfgang, it can feel a bit cooler up in the air. That’s why we usually recommend a light jacket or a thin windbreaker —except on very hot summer days.
The following are well suited:
- comfortable pants or shorts
- T-shirt or athletic top
- light sweater or thin jacket
- closed-toe athletic shoes
Skirts and dresses aren’t ideal. During a tandem flight, the harness is fastened between your legs, so pants are much more comfortable and practical.
Clothing for Cool Weather
In the spring, fall, and winter, or during cool morning flights, we recommend clothing similar to what you’d wear for hiking. You should be able to move comfortably while still being well protected from the wind.
The following are ideal:
- long pants
- Sweater or fleece
- lightweight windbreaker
- Closed-toe shoes with traction
- gloves when it’s cool out
Gloves can be very comfortable, especially in late fall, winter, and spring. If necessary, we can also provide jackets or gloves here.
Sunglasses, Eyeglasses, and Contact Lenses
Sunglasses are highly recommended for a tandem flight. They protect against the sun, the wind, and the bright light over Lake Wolfgang.
You can fly just fine even if you wear regular glasses. Contact lenses are also no problem. The only important thing is that everything fits well and you feel comfortable.
Cell phone, purse, and personal items
You can bring your cell phone on the flight. During the flight, we’ll stow it safely in the storage compartment of your harness.
It’s best to leave larger bags, backpacks, or luggage at our office. We have plenty of storage space there, so you can travel to the launch site without carrying any unnecessary weight.
We do not recommend bringing your own cameras or GoPros. Our pilots carry professional cameras and can take photos and videos of your tandem flight.
Conclusion: The Right Clothing for Your Tandem Flight
For your tandem flight over Lake Wolfgang, you’ll need, above all, closed-toe shoes with good support, comfortable clothing, and—depending on the temperature—a light jacket.
In the summer, shorts are fine; in cooler weather, we recommend hiking clothes, a windbreaker, and possibly gloves. Skirts, dresses, and open-toed shoes are not suitable for tandem flights.
